What Are They Doing While Unattended?
Some Cold Hard Facts about Employee Internet Abuse
According to a recent Vault.com survey, reading news online is the leading non-work task performed by employees online. Other common time wasters are making travel arrangements, making purchases and job searches. Other habits are downloading music, games or porn, which takes up a great deal of bandwidth.
While employees who simply surf the net or chat online at work are harmful, they aren't nearly as harmful as employees who secretly sell company secrets to the competition. What if an employee emails secret formulas to the competition? Will you know they did so? Do you have the proper measures in place to catch it?
Approximately 77% of major USA firms record and review at least one type of employee activity at work. These activities include monitoring telephone calls, e-mails and Internet connections. Furthermore, 63% of firms surveyed monitor Internet connection activity while 46% exclusively monitor e-mails.
When employee activity is monitored it can be analyzed for unapproved activity. Problem employees can be disciplined. They will think twice about improper usage after being called to your desk and shown an actual printout of their activity. This type of monitoring is typically low-cost with a high return on investment (ROI).
